Wake up! It’s 86 Day!

“Did you buy this car because of that anime?”

Among all of the special holidays for car enthusiasts, August 8, otherwise known as 86 Day, may be the most special of them all.

The Toyota Sprinter Trueno made its namesake as a force to be reckoned with as drivers discovered the capabilities that this nimble machine has. Lightweight, balanced, and a quick throttle response made this economy car one of the top choices for car lovers to enjoy winding mountain roads. The car quickly proved itself a worthy competitor in grip racing, drifting, and rally competitions alike.

The AE86 became a global phenomenon after its leading role in the Initial D series, and the rest is history.

We had the pleasure of meeting Jason and creating a video of his car in celebration of this year’s upcoming 86 day. The car is in immaculate condition and styled very well, using mostly period-correct TRD options with just a few modern upgrades to make it comfortable enough for daily driving; this was one of the best examples of an AE86 that I’ve seen. I couldn’t even keep track of how many people did a double-take, stopped to snap a photo, or yell ‘NICE CAR!’ during our shoot.

Under the hood is a black-top 20V 4AGE with individual throttle bodies which really brought the sound of his engine to life. The 15-inch TE37 perfectly fit the car’s small body. One feature that really stood out to me was the red-toned carbon fiber hood which really pulled the two-tone look together. As Dylan and I gawked at how beautiful his car was, I had a good laugh when he told us that it had caused him so many headaches and there was still a lot of upgrades he wanted to do. Why are us car-people always so hard on ourselves?

Overall, we had an amazing time shooting this car and causing traffic jams (our specialty). We hope that you’ll enjoy watching this week’s video as much as we did making it.
